King's College Chapel, Cambridge

King's College Chapel
Wall bosses
Stained glass windows
This is perhaps the most famous place in Cambridge. It is a fine example of Gothic perpendicular design. Construction was started in the reign of King Henry VI but was completed in the reign of King Henry VIII taking over 100 years.

It is a vast place with fine vaulted ceilings (largest in the world), elaborate wall bosses, superb stained glass windows (medieval) and a Rubens painting behind the altar.

If you live within 12 miles a card can be obtained giving free access.

It is perhaps best known for the "Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols" that is broadcast around the world at Christmas time. When we visited on April 2nd 2015 the BBC Outside Broadcast unit was parked outside King's.

There are plenty of places to eat in Cambridge. The Copper Kettle just across the road on King's Parade is, surprisingly considering its location, very reasonable.
King's from the River Cam

Kings College stretches down to the River Cam on the Backs. The lawns are always in superb condition. Some of the views of Kings from the Backs are world famous. The world famous chapel is about 150m from the river. It can be accessed from King's Parade or from The Backs.

Cambridge Leper Chapel

We have still to visit this chapel, which is the oldest intact building in Cambridge.  It dates from the 12th century.  It still has special services from time to time.  At one time it was a chapel for leprosy sufferers.

Every year the famous Stourbridge Fair is recreated here. This fair was famous across Europe in medieval times. It closed in 1933.

The photo was taken today from the top of a moving bus on my way to my U3AC course in the city.  We hope to visit the chapel later this year. There is no parking at the chapel.

It is located just off Newmarket Road, on the way out of the city, just after crossing the railway line at Barnwell Junction (where the Mildenhall branch line started) and about 200m before the Cambridge United football stadium on the opposite side of the road.
